If having many materials, should definitely have this
William Roberts (Clearwater,, FL) 6/19/2019 1:08 PM
Current opinion seems to be that everyone has a different sense of smell to at least some degree. Sometimes it's drastic, such as from the fact that everyone is anosmic to (can't smell at all) some things, and one person can be anosmic to a completely different list than another. Or, one person could pick up only some of the generally-agreed qualities of a material while another picks up different aspects. To me, Exaltone is an outstanding material, right up there (but different, and to be used in smaller amount) than Firmenich Exaltolide and Exaltenone, and muscone. I think though I probably don't really perceive fully how great it is. I don't use things that don't work to my nose, because that being the case I probably won't use them properly. But if they do work for me, while professional opinion widely says they're even better than I think, then I'll take that opinion over mine! According to Chris Bartlett, in a discussion of what few materials can enhance nearly any formulation, he said "Then there are others that used in small amounts can enhance almost any fragrance and there I would include things like Exaltone, Muscone..." That's a really high recommendation!

It's been a few years since my first review. the first time I purchased Exaltone I was a bit underwhelmed so I never gave it another shot. However, a few days ago I decided to try it out again. I haven't yet used it in a composition but I just did a few skin patch tests like I did the first time, but this time I have a different perspective! I don't know if I got a bad batch or the wrong product the first time I got this a few years ago, or maybe my nose just wasn't trained that good. In any case, this time I definitely pick up the greasy, animalic, powdery nuances that were described! But there's nothing funky or off putting about it at all. To me, this smells very similar to, if not almost exactly like Exaltolide but perhaps with a bit more potency. I also detect similarities to Aurelione as well, except that Exaltone has more of the cottony backdrop without the more delicate, sensual, buttery nuance that Auerlione possesses. Overall, I am glad that I gave this another shot. It is well worth it!
A jewel

A jewel among perfumery molecules! Extremely powerful, intense, diffusive, sweet musky odor of great elegance and radiance. Its presense in the glandular secretions of the musk rat or bisam, Ondatra zibethicus (Muridae), should only make us humble. To my opinion, Exaltone ranks among the absolute divine creations (relations) of this world. See more, if you please, at
Warm diffusive animal musk
Mark (New York, NY) 5/17/2015 3:00 PM
Musks can be tricky to evaluate on their own - and, of course, they're never used alone. By itself this is unimpressive, but in combination with sandalwood, animalic, and other base note materials it really shines, particularly for its warmth, diffusion, and fixation, and particularly after it has had time to develop. Sultry, sexy stuff.
Not as expected

I'm going to give a very honest review of this product. First of all, this is a very nice smelling musk. I can see how it would definitely be worth it's weight in a composition, and would definitely "exalt" it as advertised. HOWEVER, this musk is definitely not animalic and greasy as advertised. Instead, what I get is a nice, clean, slightly powdery, soft musk. It's aroma is similar to but more pronounced than most other white musks on the market of it's type and for that it's a plus. It is slightly erogenous in the fresh laundry, snuggly skin type of way but it is not erotic or anything. It is very similar to Aurelione but more detectable. Overall it is definitely nice but I am disappointed in that I was expecting something funky and animalic. For a TRUE animalic note, I would suggest either Shangralide or Tonquitone.
